Dearborn Public Schools will get a turn in the spotlight next week as one of three districts featured on a television program titled 'The Best Schools In Michigan.' The thirty minute program will air on WXYZ-Channel 7 on Thursday, May 28th at 10:00pm.“We were very excited to be asked to take part in the Best Schools program,” commented Dearborn Public Schools Superintendent Brian Whiston.
“It’s an excellent way for the district to tell our story and share with others how we are being successful at providing quality instruction and meeting the academic needs of each child in our district,” Whiston added.
Along with the segment on Dearborn’s schools, the district will take part in a live web-cast that also begins at 10:00pm on May 28th, and continues an additional thirty minutes after the on-air program ends. The interactive web-cast will be streamed live over the internet from the Channel 7 studios and provide interested parents and students the opportunity to ask questions and receive additional information directly from school district staff. To access the live web-cast, log on to www.wxyz.com on the night of the program.
'The Best Schools In Michigan' program is an opportunity for the district to share their successes with everyone in the Metro-Detroit area. New programs such as all day kindergarten, partnerships with the community, and the variety of high school programs will be some of the topics discussed on the show.
Give me a break. The district is completely broke, the Board dysfunctional and half the kids cant speak functional English. And this is one of the best??
ReplyDeleteThey grade on a scale, Dane.
ReplyDeleteMakes you stop and wonder doesn't it. It will be interesting to see what they are best in.
ReplyDeleteMy Guess teaching in a foreign language.
ReplyDeleteI can think of many other school districts where this would be the case, but Dearborn currently is not one where they excel in the traditional subjects of reading, writing, math, social studies, and science. My guess is this is on the wrong channel--it should be on the comedy channel on April 1! Oh, wait, if Dearborn High is any indication, they are best in pissing away money on sports!
ReplyDeleteYou all are too much! I t looks like ABC finally has a hit comedy!
ReplyDeleteAn article in the freep says that districts pay $25,000 to be on the show
ReplyDeleteAnon. - could you please tell me which day this article appeared? Thanks.
ReplyDeleteWow Anonymous would this be the Dearborn Schools version of "pay to play"???????
ReplyDeleteWhat wasn't clear was that the show was a 30-minute marketing showcase. The three districts featured -- Fraser Public Schools, Oxford Community Schools and Southgate Community Schools -- each paid $25,000 to be included.
ReplyDeleteIt's an unusual way to market, but a sign of the times. Many districts across Michigan are reeling from enrollment and funding declines. Some are fighting back by spending money on marketing and advertising, in the hopes of attracting new students and keeping those they already have.
At least one of the districts involved said the program on WXYZ-TV paid off.
Her firm was behind the half-hour show that aired April 2 on WXYZ-TV (Channel 7). The idea behind the program, Sikes said, was to highlight "the great things that are happening in education in Michigan." The districts -- Fraser Public Schools, Oxford Community Schools and Southgate Community Schools -- paid $25,000 each to help cover the production costs, she said.

PR, thanks for the info. The part I don't understand is B. Whiston saying that they are excited to be asked to participate. Does this mean that Dearborn gets free publicity while the other schools pay? Probably not right.
ReplyDeleteSadly, DPS did not come across as well as the other schools in the tv spot. The Dearborn segment wasn't as memorable as the other districts. Mr. Whiston did a very good job during the webcast. Dearborn looked good there, but not too many people watched that. Most parents I spoke to were saying, "I need to get my kids to Novi".
ReplyDeleteI can't find anyone that watched it either. Do you think that it was worth $25,000?
ReplyDeleteHAHA!! Not worth $25! The days of people moving to Dearborn for the schools are long gone people! I'm not sure who this program was supposed to impress, but it failed. I'm sure the WelcomeHome Dearborn clowns were involved somehow.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Sweater. It was an opportunity wasted. The piece they put together for Dearborn wasn't worth any amount of money. The district isn't at all what it use to be and it seems to be getting worse. Many parents are already planning on moving or starting homeschooling co-ops before their kids reach middle school. The general feeling among parents I come in contact with are that the elementary schools are good, but after that, look elsewhere. With all the effort the district is putting into getting grants for the east end elementary students (while ignoring the west end kids), I suspect support for elementary schools will soon start to fade.
