The Bar is More Than Just 'A Bar'

Four years ago, Christopher and Megan Soroka started with a simple premise: Take a classic, old Dearborn watering hole and turn it into something they could be proud of. A true neighborhood gathering place where old-timers could rub elbows with thirty and forty-somethings. Where everyone would feel welcome. Something they could call their own.
“It’s small ‘Mom and Pop’ places like this that built this economy,” notes Mr. Soroka. “The corporate world has gotten so big we tend to forget that. We wanted to bring back a simpler time.”
They certainly kept things simple when choosing a name. The old tavern had been called The Holiday Bar, McFadden’s and, most recently, JP Kelly’s. Megan decided on something even more elemental: The Bar.
“Megan came up with that to get people talking,” Mr. Soroka recalls. “Usually people say, ‘We’ll meet at the bar.’ In our case, they really were.”
Megan also managed at Cheli’s Chili and had experience running places throughout Dearborn. Between she and Christopher, they worked together and built that place they dreamed of. A spot where you could find a great burger, fantastic fried fish and even a fried bologna sandwich. If you were lucky, you’d get a great conversation, too. The walls were lined with pictures of Dearborn past and present. The Bar felt like home.
Unfortunately, things didn’t stay simple. On a cold January morning two years ago, Megan and a co-worker were murdered at Cheli’s downtown by a disgruntled ex-employee. That’s when time stopped for Christopher and for Megan’s family and friends.
How do you recover from such unbearable loss? Well, the sad fact is you probably never do. You struggle through each hour and every day. Which is what Christopher Soroka has done for the last two years.
But here’s the remarkable thing, that barest glint of light amid such darkness: Megan and Christopher’s dream lives on. Mr. Soroka has, with the help of an extraordinary staff, kept The Bar going. Surely, it hasn’t been easy, but The Bar is still that special spot where neighbors go. They still drink and eat and laugh and joke and leave happy. It still feels like home.
And that’s all Christopher and Megan ever wanted in the first place.

The Bar is located at 16o1o Michigan Avenue, west of Greenfield.  Stop by Super Bowl Sunday for raffles, drink specials and a burger. We'll have the fried bologna sandwich.

Sounds like the type of guy and the kind of place that people around here need to support. God Bless Them.

The Bar has quite a legacy in Dearborn as the late Megan's late father was police chief of Dearborn (Darr was the last name) when I was growing up here, and more recently the Bar served as the victory party site for city councilman Tom Tafelski, who had strong support from Dearborn police in both of his successful runs for council.

It is the type of place where police, lawyers, court workers, etc. gathered after working hours.

What a shame if it closes..

AND WHAT A SHAME IF YOU DELETE MY COMMENT AS I STILL HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO POST AS ANYONE BUT "ANONYMOUS"

Anonymous, I'm sorry but I think they should delete your post if you still can't figure out how to do it. It serves as sort of an IQ test for entry.

I went in a few times when it was called Kellys 5 years ago. I didn't think much of the place and havent been in since but I'll stop by and give them my business. I like to see our hometown businesses get this publicity so keep it up while there are still some around.

Good luck to The Bar! Is Bamboozles still around? I used to go to lots of places on that end of town, but there all closed now Im sure.

I know city workers still stop in. It really is a great little place that deserves the publicity. Doug Thomas did a segment about The Bar on his version of Meet Your Council. Nice to see them getting attention here too.

So how does this work? The writer stops in and drinks for free all night and writes a nice article about your bar? Must be nice. I got to get me one of these here blogs.

    Pay to Play,
    You are such an ASS!
Nobody has and will get anything for free, these guys take suggestions from regular writers for deserving people and businesses that should get recognition, if you hear of a good place don't you tell your friends?
But if you really want something for free how about a kick in the Ass!
I was in yesterday with Mike Albano we had the fish, it was very good, I'll be back again soon, not just for the food but for the conversation as well, you can actually talk, no loud music playing.
Chris is a great guy, I see him alot at other Dearborn businesses.
(they also have ample free parking)

I used to go in the old Kenilworth Pub years ago for fried bologna sandwiches! I'll have to give The Bar a try. You tell 'em Pat! I like your spirit! Seems like you can't do anything right these days without someone raining on the parade.

  16. Just caught this here this morning, I completely with Candymanpat and I'd like to expound a little upon his comment. Poster 'Pay to Play' is indeed an ass with tainting this topic of alleged misgivings by this blog owner. There is no evidence of such here with respect to this blog that I witness other than goodwill gestures towards others in our community. However, 'Pay to Play' is also what I despise most in a person, jealousy and envy with then asserting the creation of their own blog as tool to obtain such misgivings that they now allege.

So, I stand in firm agreement with Candymanpat that you, 'Pay to Play' are an ASS, and also the lowest, most lecherous form of life possible.

With respect to The Bar and Mr. Soroka, I have been in his establishment a few times this past summer. The atmosphere is friendly and as Candymanpat stated without the loud music to intrude conversation. The prices seem reasonable and the food looked good. My few times of being there were over cocktails so I'm unable to comment further.

This is where I also must draw attention back to the blog owner; sometimes people such as myself need little reminders of these friendly little establishments Dearborn like in this topic. Thanks also for others input and I'll make sure to check out The Bar's fare soon.

I wish Mr. Soroka well in his personal life and with his establishment.

Just a quick note, the old Kenilworth Pub owners moved to Mich Ave in 1994 (old Miskos) and serve the same fried bologna sandwiches at The Biergarten.

You poor, naive saps make me laugh. All I see are a bunch of feelgood stories on here so it's probably run by the city or the Chamber of Commerce anyhow. You think you're getting 'news' but you're really getting 'ads.' I hope the writer enjoyed all that free beer.

    LX,
Thank you for that. I will have to go on a little 'fried bologna' pub crawl :)!

    Pay to Play,
Do you think if this site was run by the City or Tha Chamber that they would let everyone bash and have negative comments about them?
Also if you seen the picture and story above this one I ask you what are they advertising? spilled Gas?
Please do us a favor go find a feelbad story site.
Some of us know the guys whom put this site together and for free. They do a great job. They started this to have more than just 1 site which we all have enjoyed.
    That site is Deepsaidwhat.com

  22. You're welcome Kerry K. and I agree, an angioplasty special pub-crawl sounds fun. ;)

As for the rest of the nonsense in this thread, this is why I try to keep my comments and input to a minimum. I knew what I wrote would only bring about more unsubstantiated and frankly, b i z a r r e writings that only reinforce my position in what I previously wrote to said person.

I really do mostly ignore these things and as I now see in other topics here and sometimes elsewhere. It truly is a shame that some have to take it upon themselves to muddy this for all, just too somehow find comfort in their bitter shortcomings in life.

    Enjoy the day...

Ah the memories. I remember grabbing a few at pine tree and then stumbling over to Wilsons for a few more. Anyone remember when there was a bowling alley on the second floor across from what used to be Baskin Robins on Warren Avenue. According to the Freep the economy is driving more people to drink. In the east end you are out of luck unless you go to the PLAV on Greenfield and Tireman. Great boombas and they speak English

As CandymanPat stated, we stopped in The Bar Friday to try out their lunches and even though I don't often eat fish, their fish was oustanding and they include a large amount of fries with it as well.

Let me also state that we never asked for nor received anything free from The Bar and neither have the owners of Dearborn News Online. The owners of Dearborn News Online make NO money from this site and yet they offer it as a service to Dearborn because they love Dearborn, plain and simple. We need more residents and people like this in Dearborn as far as I'm concerned.

The Bar offers many of the lowest priced daily specials I've seen around town and their one-half pound burger is among the best, if not the best found anywhere. We've stopped in there many times previouly at all different hours of the day and night and service is always polite, prompt and friendly. Even their clientele is very friendly and neighborly, reminiscent of the what is most important in life, people befriending people.

The Bar is encompassed by a very nice environment and decorated in decor and pictures from wonderful eras from the Detroit Metro area. No matter how many people are in The Bar it is peaceful, safe and I could actually hear what others were saying to me, which was NOT the case in another establishment I visted later that night.

I have only met owner Chris Saroka within the last year and don't know him that well but I plan on getting to know him better because he is one very nice person and he loves Dearborn. Chris was raised in Detroit and has resided in Dearborn since 1994. His wife Megan who was the victim of that horrific crime, was raised in Dearborn and graduated from Dearborn High School in 1975. Her maiden name was Megan Darr, so perhaps many of you might have known her and may have another reason to help by patronizing this wonderful establishment.

Since Megan was born, bred, raised and lived her entire life in Dearborn, since Megan and Chris both invested in a bar in Dearborn, since Chris still lives in Dearborn and since The Bar is such a wonderful place it would be smart and wise for many of us to patronize The Bar regularly. We not only would be helping a Dearborn business owner and Dearborn homeowner deserving of the help, we would be helping Dearborn, a city that appears to be losing businesses far more than many other cities.

Businesses in Dearborn are closing in record numbers, many mid to large size chains are either pulling out or no longer moving in and worst of all many small business owners are gone and few, if any are moving in to replace them. For us to complain about losing all those businesses as we do often, and then for us to fail to regularly patronize The Bar would be foolish on our part. It also hurts us and the city far more in the long run.

Lastly, The Bar has FREE parking and I am SO grateful for that because I don't have to keep remembering to go out and feed the meters. That is another $7.00 to $11.00 I can invest in helping The Bar and it is worth every bit of it.

I wish Chris well and will regularly patronize The Bar and by the responses on here I am sure many of you will as well...

The staff in The Bar speaks English and everyone else in there I know of also speaks English, and it is not closing, in reply to Anonymous.

Also, The Bar is run smartly and the only ones getting a complimentary drink from time to time are patrons who regularly spend money there, which is standard in any bar run by any wise bar owner, in reply to Pay to Play.

I've heard they are pretty innovative in The Bar and next time I go there I'm going to ask them if they will add friend peanut butter and banana sandwiches to the menu.

  26. Michael Adams1/31/2009

It's so easy and so cowardly to pipe up with a bunch of unsubstantiated bullcrap. It's almost too easy. Now I know why some sites make you register before you can post. Helps keep nutjobs like Pay to Play away from the big kids.
So put me on record with LX and the rest: I like reading about these businesses and I definitely need a nudge now and then to remember some of these places. Last week's story on the Player's Guild is a prime example. And I will definitely make a point of stopping in The Bar next time I'm in the mood for a burger and a beer (which is almost always).

CandymanPat, since I ain't nuttin but a Hounddog, I'll try it next time I'm there. Don't Be Cruel though if I put on a concert there even though I'm still sick of Fame and
    Fortune.

You know Marie is the Name of my Latest Flame and I still love Girls, Girls, Girls, but all the letters keep coming back Return to Sender so I've had to live in Hearbreak Hotel not far from The Bar.

I've tried Rappin one of my songs but even though It's The Same Old Song it just don't sound the same and every time I rap it I want to go out and karate chop someone but all my legs will do is Shake, Rattle and Roll, but it's natural cause I'm 75 years old, I think.
There's nothing hip and hop about rapping a song unless you can't sing and my voice is still pretty strong.

I heard CandymanPat had a 'Little Cafe' on the Other Side of the Border from The Bar. Too bad it closed cause I loved that Sanders Ice Cream and your Hall of Champions and all the rappin you did there and still do all over town like in The Bar.

Since you ain't working and you won't take that job at McDonald's I can get you, which means you can't serve me my 10 Big Macs a day, maybe you can be part of my Dearborn Mafia and help me give scarves with my sweat on them to all the ladies. At the end I'd expect you to say, Elvis has left The Bar arena. The pay is pretty good and I'd set you up with a house, a Lincoln Navigator and all plenty of spending money.

Thank you. Thank you very much.

Donna I hear you're single and that someone on both blogs is Stuck On You. See you at The Bar.

Great, homedown, friendly place to regularly visit. Great food, drinks and people. Aunt Bee style cookin, Barney Fife type humor and plenty of Sheriff Andy Taylor like common sense in running the place.

There are 2 other very important examples of Chris' loyalty to Dearborn I feel merit mentioning. While Chris is a Dearborn homeowner and business owner, Chris also sets a wonderful example in that the majority of the vendors his business utilizes are also located in Dearborn. He also patronizes other Dearborn businesses quite frequently in his social life. He mentioned how important this is to the survival of Dearborn and I agree. Therefore he is somebody that is highly deserving our our patronage at The Bar.

Chris also mentioned something about the perception others have in and out of town about Dearborn. Something many of us are guilty of, including myself that we might be wise to think about more often. Many of us regularly refer to Dearborn as West versus East which divides intead of uniting. Regardless of the differences, in reality Dearborn is Dearborn, period.

Despite the fact that we realize there are many issues facing Dearborn, the perceptions we display among ourselves is constantly viewed by the media and people who may be future Dearborn residents and/or homeowners.
As hard as it may be at times, we all would be wise as Chris says to show more unity than division because neighbors and businesses supporting teach other, regardless of what side of town they are located in, is what makes a healthy, successful city.

Thank you Chris for that bit of wisdom as well. You most definitely deserve our patronage as well as friendship.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Well, opinions vary I guess.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I applaud Mr Sorokas efforts to buy local and visit local shops and restaurants. As far as the 'division' in our community, well that's a two way street. How many of The Bar's Arab neighbors stop in an support him? How many shop at Dearborn Sausage or Dearbron Farm Market? Few, if any, in my experience. Instead, they continue to isolate themselves both culturaly and economically. That is their choice and their right, but I think it's a major source of this so called division.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Thunderbird2/02/2009

Blech, Dearborn should be so lucky for them to stay so isolated.

    ReplyDelete
  40. For Chripes Sake2/02/2009

It's human nature for some to want to shop near where they reside. This I can understand.

It's human nature for some to fear the unknown, to be uncomfortable with people that are different, to resist change. As mentioned earlier, conquer and divide resolves nothing. This I cannot understand and will result in sure doom.

If Chris really has the beliefs mentioned in an earlier posting, I'd have to say he's a far better person than most.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Chris Soroka - The Bar2/04/2009

Michael, I would like to thank everyone for their wonderful comments which are mostly positive. Thank you all again for all you have written and thank Dave & Pat if you see them.

Maybe because I was raised in Detroit which at the time was mostly black and my father was not all that tolerant of people of color which has mellowed with his age, this is why I always look at the person and not the color. If someone is intentionally bad & hurtful to someone I will not let them into my life. I don't care what color they are, what religion they they practice or if it is a man or a woman. Many of us will always have different beliefs and I understand that.

I am part Polish,Ukrainian & German. My dad grew up in a Polish neighborhood and when we went to see his parents we did the "Polish things" with other Polish people. People staying within what they know is human nature.

To answer edsels question about people in the neighborhood that are Arab that come into the bar, I don't know how many. What I do know is no matter who comes in I will treat them with the same respect I do everyone else unless they do something to lose that respect and the persons nationality, race or descent has nothing to do with it. Decent behavior I will respect, indecent behavior I will not.

On a personal side note, after what happened to my world a little over 2 years ago I could choose to hate and be angry at the black race and many would understand, but that wouldn't make it right. My wife was taken from me by a 17 year old boy because of his troubles in life. Some of those troubles were probably his fault and some of those troubles could have come from others I don't know. What I do know is my wife was taken away from me for the color green "money" not because the criminal who killed her was black.

Most everyone knows the business climate out there and myself along with the others that work at the bar will do everything they can to make you feel at home and then hope you come back.

Thanks to all of you for you comments good or bad and I hope if you do come in you are treated well and if you have any issues with The Bar please let me know ASAP and I will do my best to address and resolve the issue.

I'm looking forward to meeting you in The Bar.

    Dear Pay to Play,
It's seems that you are not from Dearborn, or if you are you don't live here anymore? You see, we don't have to bribe people to speak well of our establishments... they speak for themselves. Great Places and Great People tend to gather together. Chris Soroka happens to own and run a very Friendly Neighborhood Bar with Great Service! He doesn't NEED a pat on the back, but he certainly deserves one! Running a small business is hard work! I myself frequent all the local establishments in and around Dearborn. We have this thing call "Comeraderie" around here... If you don't like it...maybe you should just stay away...just sayin~
